Completing Part A of the Disability Tax Credit application
Fill out Part A of the application by following these steps:
1: Provide basic information about yourself (or the person applying)
- First and last name (as is listed with the CRA)
- Social Insurance Number (SIN)
- Mailing address (as listed with the CRA)
- Date of birth
2: Provide basic information about the person claiming the credit
3: Confirm if you will claim the credit, or if your caregiver will claim part of the credit
4: Automatically readjust your taxes for any previous years you are applying for
5: Give consent for your medical practitioner to provide information to the CRA about your restrictions on your behalf
6: If applying with the paper application, remember to sign and date the bottom of Part A of the form
Transferring part or all of the credit
If you do not pay a lot in income tax, you can transfer unused amounts of your credit to a family member that helps you pay for food, shelter, and clothing.
Family members include spouses or common law partners; children or grandchildren; parents; grandparents; siblings; uncles; aunts; nieces; and nephews. In Part A of the form, you’ll first be asked to provide:
- Your caregiver’s name
- How they are related to you
- Social insurance number
- Whether you live with them
- And what years they have provided you with money for food, shelter, or clothing
Next, you will be asked to provide details about how your caregiver supports you with food, shelter, and clothing. The CRA is looking for how your caregiver supports you financially.
For example, support with rent, buying groceries regularly, or providing money to buy clothes. Emotional or physical support will not be counted in this section but would be useful information for your medical practitioner to include in Part B of your form.
Applying for past years
If you have been restricted in daily activities for a long time, you can access the DTC for up to 10 years before you apply. To ask the CRA to automatically readjust your previous tax returns, simple check “yes” to question 3 of Part A of the form. To note, only applicants or their legal guardians can get their tax returns. If credit amounts are being transferred to someone who is not a legal guardian, you can request that the CRA readjust taxes by either submitting T1 Adjustment forms, or by simply writing a letter.
