After the DTC has been submitted

Once the DTC application has been submitted, one of three things can happen:

  1. If the CRA has any questions about the application, they will contact your medical practitioner directly or send them an additional questionnaire.
  2. You will be sent a Notice of Determination Letter that will let you know if you are approved and how long you are approved for. If you are approved for future years, you do not need to reapply unless the CRA asks. If you are approved for a few years, you can renew your application after it expires.
  3. You are denied. If this is the case, this may not mean that you don’t qualify. Consult an advocate for support.

Processing times

The application can take a few weeks to process. You can check wait times here.

What next?

If you are approved for the DTC, you will want to:

  1. Claim the credit on your taxes. To do so, claim the “disability amount” on your taxes. If unused amount of the credit was transferred to you, claim your amount on another line in your taxes https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/individuals/segments/tax-credits-deductions-persons-disabilities/disability-tax-credit/claiming-dtc.html
  2. Make sure you claim all the years you are eligible for: If you did not get your taxes automatically readjusted for all the years you were eligible for DTC, you can fill out T1 Adjustment Requests https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/forms/t1-adj.html, or write a letter to the CRA to ask for credit amounts from previous years
  3. Find out what other benefits you can get with the DTC. Find out how connected benefits of the DTC like the Child Disability Benefit, and Registered Disability Savings Plan might apply to you.
